As the start of the sustainability study, the Halcrow team, with the approval of the Steering Group, developed a convention for naming discrete management units/reaches within the River Itchen catchment.
The proposed naming convention facilitated conservation status assessments through the activities of the study's work programme. In the proposed convention, the Study team adopted code 1 for Cheriton Stream/the Tichborne, 2 for the River Arle, 3 for Candover Stream, 4 for the Upper Itchen, 5 for the Middle Itchen and 6 for the Lower Itchen.
Smaller divisions were defined as sub divisions e.g. 5a, 6b etc and floodplain areas would be indicated with a capital letter suffix e.g. 5F.
